Five Benefits of Choosing Rustic Homewares

In today’s environmentally-conscious landscape, salvaging, reusing and repurposing materials has both never been so important nor so popular.

Naturally, we have a genuine love for recycling, upcycling and repurposing and anything reclaimed gets our vote too. We’re proud to have built our business on a foundation of finding the beauty in things that others don’t see or would otherwise have ended up in landfill.

But what are the tangible benefits of choosing rustic homewares that utilise materials that have previously been used elsewhere? Well, here are five…

The Environment

There’s a considerable global impetus towards protecting and enhancing the environment and by salvaging items, repurposing or by utilising pre-used materials you can make a real difference.

This applies to both homewares and items for the garden too. Not only do they look great, but they are a fantastic alternative to buying new items. This eco-friendly approach of reusing materials rather than purchasing from new, delivers a considerable, worthwhile boost to the environment.

Environmentally-speaking, recycled and reclaimed materials will always be preferable to newly manufactured items. Whatever the project you undertaking – be that complete redesign or just the addition of one or two items – you can be rightly proud that by choosing items using reclaimed materials over mass produced products available on the high street, you are genuinely playing your part in reducing the environment impact that manufacturing such products from new has.

Selecting salvaged or recycled wooden products in particular, ensures that you can help minimise the impact of deforestation. It may sound dramatic but if we all did the same, we could make a major difference.

The Application

Using reclaimed materials in interior design is not a new concept but the application of it is an ever-evolving process. As trends change, so do the applications.

One of the key benefits of using reclaimed materials in homewares is that such items require relatively little care. They should last forever, and may be made from woods that are hard to find today.

By using such materials, you can work with this trend and introduce quirky and salvaged products into your home and garden. From reclaimed barn wood boarded panelling to furniture and display pieces, the applications are only limited by your imagination.

The Unique

The beauty of using reclaimed materials is that each piece has its own unique look. No two pieces are ever the same and it is this individuality that makes each item stand out in any home or garden setting.

This is in strong opposition to new, mass-produced items that are more commonly used and are widely available. And truthfully, who wants the same as everybody else?

Your unique style can be reflected in the design and application of the items you choose to enhance your setting.

The Style

If you are looking to combine both the old and the new within your design, it is important to bear in mind that matching the style of the old – the handcrafted – with the new, is often quite a challenge.

Aged materials have individual characteristics that are impossible to replicate in modern production methods. As a result, with the addition of feature rustic elements, your design can be enhanced considerably through the addition of key pieces to add a truly stylish touch to the overall look and feel.

For example, if you are creating an industrial-style living space or a rustic cottage garden look, then it is often difficult to find new products that will match the style you have in mind or enhance the space. This is where rustic pieces can be the perfect addition.

The Character

Many people find the use of reclaimed materials is a fantastic way to bring a unique character and authenticity to a home or garden. The use of reclaimed materials gives a greater individuality within the overall design.

Should you be looking for a homely, warm and softer feel, the character of a paler reworked or colour-washed wood works perfectly. Or perhaps you’re chasing an industrial feel with more robust and raw elements, then you can find the perfect piece(s) to match your desired character.

An urban rustic design theme that incorporates old reclaimed materials into modern spaces allows you to introduce unique, character-packed materials in the overall design. This way you can ensure a unique, memorable look.
